The mission of the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2) is to achieve the highest level of scientific and technological excellence in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. Its research lines focus on the newly-discovered physical and chemical properties that arise from the behaviour of matter at the nanoscale. ICN2 has been awarded with the Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence distinction for three consecutive periods (2014-2018, 2018-2022 and 2023-2026). ICN2 comprises 20 Research Groups, 7 Technical Development and Support Units and Facilities, and 2 Research Platforms, covering different areas of nanoscience and nanotechnology.
Job Title: High Performance and Scientific Computing Engineer
Research area or group: IT Department, Theory and Simulation Group, and Theoretical and Computational Nanoscience Group
Main Tasks and responsibilities:
We seek for a computing engineer with demonstrated experience in the installation and management of High-Performance Computing infrastructures, specialized in scientific computing. The successful candidate will engage with the IT department of ICN2, and with the research groups that use scientific computing as a tool in their research, to set up and run the computational facilities of the centre. Tasks and responsibilities will also include the installation and maintenance of scientific libraries, queuing systems, storage infrastructures, hardware, network communication and all other necessary actions for a smooth and efficient performance of the HPC facilities.
A high capacity to understand and cover the needs of the scientific groups that use the HPC facilities is key for this position. In this respect, although scientific programming is not among the tasks of the position, successful candidates must be able to interact with the researchers developing the scientific software, and thus must have sufficient knowledge of scientific programming languages and tools (Fortran, parallelization, I/O, numerical methods, etc). Knowledge of usage of modern heterogeneous architectures (including GPUs) is also a must.
Requirements:
- Education: MSc or PhD in computer science, software engineering, computational physics, or related fields.
- Knowledge and Experience
- Strong skills in Linux environments, especially in scientific environments. Expertise with installation, administration, monitoring, and maintaining secure Linux/Unix operating systems.
- Familiarity with low-latency/high-bandwidth, interconnected infrastructure (including Infiniband, 10/100GigE, and others).
- Expertise with HPC cluster management tools, job schedulers, and other HPC tools.
- Knowledge of HPC storage principles, file systems and compute node storage.
- Proficiency with fundamental programming skills (Bash, Python, Fortran, C).
- Familiarity with shared and distributed memory parallelism (OpenMP, MPI), and accelerators (GPUs) and its programming tools (OpenACC, CUDA, ...).
- Proficiency with multi-vendor management, security and network/Internet protocols.
- Ability to establish processes for maintaining system performance and managing best-in-class standards, including the monitoring of new relevant developments in the HPC field.
- Experience building and debugging large-scale engineering/scientific software in large clusters and heterogeneous architectures is desirable.
- Experience in the use of mathematical libraries is desirable.
- Experience in performance analysis is desirable.
- Experience leveraging cloud platforms (AWS, Azure...) to deploy scientific computing is desirable.
- Personal Competences:
- Ability to communicate efficiently in English (both written and spoken) is a must. Catalan knowledge will be valued.
- Strong skills for building and maintaining detailed and accurate documentation.
- Teamwork skills required.

La missió de l'Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia (ICN2) és assolir el màxim nivell d'excel·lència científica i tecnològica en Nanociència i Nanotecnologia. Les seves línies de recerca se centren en les propietats físiques i químiques recentment descobertes que sorgeixen del comportament de la matèria a escala nanomètrica. ICN2 ha estat guardonat amb la distinció Centre d'Excel·lència Severo Ochoa durant tres períodes consecutius (2014-2018, 2018-2022 i 2023-2026). Principals tasques i responsabilitats:
Busquem un enginyer informàtic amb experiència demostrada en la instal·lació i gestió d'infraestructures de computació d'alt rendiment, especialitzat en informàtica científica. El candidat seleccionat col·laborarà amb el departament d'informàtica de l'ICN2, i amb els grups de recerca que utilitzen la informàtica científica com a eina en la seva recerca, per configurar i executar les instal·lacions computacionals del centre. Les tasques i responsabilitats inclouran també la instal·lació i el manteniment de biblioteques científiques, sistemes de cues, infraestructures d'emmagatzematge, maquinari, comunicació en xarxa i totes les altres actuacions necessàries per a un bon i eficient funcionament de les instal·lacions de l'HPC.
Una alta capacitat per entendre i cobrir les necessitats dels grups científics que utilitzen les instal·lacions d'HPC és clau per a aquesta posició. En aquest sentit, encara que la programació científica no es troba entre les tasques del lloc, els candidats seleccionats han de poder interactuar amb els investigadors que desenvolupen el programari científic i, per tant, han de tenir un coneixement suficient dels llenguatges i eines de programació científica (Fortran, paral·lelització, I/ O, mètodes numèrics, etc). També és imprescindible el coneixement de l'ús d'arquitectures heterogènies modernes (incloses les GPU).
Requisits:
- Formació: Màster o doctorat en informàtica, enginyeria del programari, física computacional o camps afins.
- Coneixements i Experiència
- Fortes habilitats en entorns Linux, especialment en entorns científics. Experiència en instal·lació, administració, supervisió i manteniment de sistemes operatius Linux/Unix segurs.
- Coneixement de la infraestructura interconnectada de baixa latència/amplada de banda alta (incloent Infiniband, 10/100GigE i altres).
- Experiència amb eines de gestió de clúster HPC, programadors de treballs i altres eines HPC.
- Coneixement dels principis d'emmagatzematge HPC, sistemes de fitxers i emmagatzematge de nodes de càlcul.
- Competència amb habilitats fonamentals de programació (Bash, Python, Fortran, C).
- Coneixement del paral·lelisme de memòria compartida i distribuïda (OpenMP, MPI), i acceleradors (GPU) i les seves eines de programació (OpenACC, CUDA, ...).
- Competència amb la gestió de diversos proveïdors, seguretat i protocols de xarxa/Internet.
- Capacitat per establir processos per mantenir el rendiment del sistema i gestionar els millors estàndards de la seva classe, inclòs el seguiment de nous desenvolupaments rellevants en l'àmbit de l'HPC.
- És desitjable tenir experiència en la creació i depuració de programari científic/d'enginyeria a gran escala en grans clústers i arquitectures heterogènies.
- És desitjable experiència en l'ús de biblioteques matemàtiques.
- Es valora experiència en anàlisi de rendiment.
- És desitjable tenir experiència en l'aprofitament de plataformes en núvol (AWS, Azure...) per implementar la informàtica científica.
- És imprescindible la capacitat de comunicar-se eficientment en anglès (tant escrit com parlat). Es valorarà el coneixement del català.
- Fortes habilitats per crear i mantenir documentació detallada i precisa.
- Es requereixen habilitats de treball en equip.
