Job Description:
Product Design Director
About Dow Jones Design & Research
Our Design & Research org brings together world-class designers and researchers with a unified purpose: to connect people to the news and information that matters most. We're the strategic force that transforms deep user understanding into exceptional product experiences across our entire portfolio—from The Wall Street Journal to Factiva.
Our integrated approach ensures that research insights directly shape design decisions, while design explorations reveal new research opportunities. Together, we're building coherent, accessible experiences that honor our 135-year legacy while pushing us boldly into the future. We're a globally distributed team spearheading a digital transformation at Dow Jones, newly staffed by industry leaders from Google, LinkedIn, The New York Times, and more. Through our combined expertise in design craft and research rigor, we ensure that millions of users can depend on our platforms for truth in a world full of noise.
About the Role
The Energy business unit at Dow Jones runs a large, complex portfolio of products: Opis, McCloskey, CMA, Axxiss, Retail, A2i, Eco Innovations, and more, that serves professionals who make high-stakes decisions in global energy markets. Product Design at Dow Jones is crucial to ensure the right decisions are made, and that's exactly why this role exists. You'll lead a talented design team towards excellence as genuine product partners, raising the quality of the work and the weight of design's voice in every room that matters.
You Will
Lead and develop a design team embedded across the Energy portfolio, enabling true product ownership,
Build the kind of working relationships with product managers and engineers where design is part of the strategy conversation, not just the delivery queue
Navigate a business unit with its own history, identity, and stakeholders, while earning trust across a complex portfolio,
Set a clear vision for what good design looks like across a diverse set of products, and hold the team accountable to it
Coach designers to think in outcomes, not outputs and helping them connect their work to what users actually need and what the business is actually trying to achieve
Make the case for design investment clearly and credibly to senior stakeholders who are used to running without a strong design function
Hire, retain, and grow the team as the portfolio evolves, keeping standards high and giving people real room to develop
You Have
8+ years in product design, leading design teams across multiple products simultaneously
A track record of transforming design teams, not just managing them. Specifically in environments where design was undervalued or under-integrated
Real experience working closely with product and engineering leadership, influencing roadmaps and strategy, not just executing on them
Strong stakeholder management skills: you can read a room, navigate competing priorities, and bring people along without losing the thread of what you're actually trying to build
Comfort operating in a complex, semi-autonomous business environment. You don't need everything to be perfectly organized before you can move
Experience with B2B or data-intensive products is a genuine advantage; familiarity with energy, commodities, or financial information markets is a bonus, not a requirement
A portfolio or body of work that shows design raising the bar on both the product and the business side. Not just beautiful screens, but demonstrable impact
