We are seeking a Senior IBM i (AS/400) Engineer to join a team responsible for supporting and evolving a mission-critical enterprise platform. This position requires deep expertise in IBM i technologies, RPG development, and DB2, along with the ability to work within complex legacy environments that support core business operations.
This is primarily a hands-on engineering role focused on application support, platform upgrades, troubleshooting, knowledge transfer, and long-term ownership of a mature IBM i ecosystem. The ideal candidate enjoys understanding complex systems, solving challenging technical problems, and working closely with teams responsible for maintaining business-critical applications
You’ll Be Working On Core IBM i Development
- Design, develop, and maintain applications written in RPG IV, ILE RPG, and CL
- Troubleshoot production issues across online and batch processing environments
- Enhance payroll, billing, deductions, and financial processing workflows
- Analyze existing application logic and implement new business requirements
- Support large-scale batch processing jobs and operational workflows

Database Engineering
- Develop and optimize DB2 for i database solutions
- Write SQL queries, stored procedures, views, and database utilities
- Improve performance of high-volume transactional workloads
- Design and evolve database structures supporting payroll and billing operations
- Participate in database modernization efforts using modern SQL standards
Systems Integration
- Support integrations between IBM i applications and enterprise systems
- Maintain interfaces with JD Edwards and related financial platforms
- Investigate data flow issues across interconnected applications
- Assist in documenting integration dependencies and business processes
Modernization Initiatives
- Analyze legacy application architecture and business logic
- Participate in system decomposition and service identification efforts
- Assist with migration planning toward modern platforms and technologies
- Document business rules and operational workflows
- Collaborate with engineering teams building future-state solutions
Required Qualifications IBM i Development
- 5+ years of IBM i (AS/400, iSeries, IBM i) development experience
- Strong RPG IV / ILE RPG programming skills
- Experience developing and supporting CL programs
- Solid understanding of IBM i operating system concepts and object architecture
- Experience working with batch processing and job scheduling environments
- Familiarity with DDS-based physical, logical, display, and printer files
Database & SQL
- Strong SQL development skills within DB2 for i
- Experience optimizing queries and troubleshooting database performance
- Understanding of indexing strategies and access-path design
- Knowledge of transaction processing, record locking, and concurrency concepts
- Experience designing and maintaining production database structures
Engineering Skills
- Strong debugging and root-cause analysis abilities
- Ability to assess change impact across complex systems
- Experience supporting production-critical applications
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with JD Edwards EnterpriseOne integrations
- Experience with service programs, binding directories, and activation groups
- Exposure to API integration patterns
- Experience modernizing legacy enterprise applications
- Familiarity with Java, C#, or modern backend development frameworks
- Experience working in payroll, accounting, financial services, or ERP environments
- Knowledge of DevOps, CI/CD, and source-control practices within IBM i ecosystems
