As a flagship research center in nanoscience and nanotechnology, our mission is to open and explore new frontiers of knowledge at the nanoscale, and bring value to society in the form of new understanding, capabilities and innovation, while inspiring and providing broad training to the next generations of researchers. Our values are Commitment, Collaboration and Transformation.
Our research lines focus on the newly-discovered physical and chemical properties that arise from the behaviour of matter at the nanoscale. ICN2 has been awarded with the Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence distinction for three consecutive periods (2014-2018 and 2018-2022 and 2023-2026). ICN2 comprises 20 Research Groups, 7 Technical Development and Support Units and Facilities, and 2 Research Platforms, covering different areas of nanoscience and nanotechnology.
Job Title: Research assistant in nanofabrication and nanoscale thermal transport
Department: Thermal Properties of Nanoscale Materials
Description of Group/Project:
The Thermal Properties of Nanoscale Materials group (GTNaM), active at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) since 2000, has become affiliated to the Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia (ICN2) in January 2021. Its activities mainly revolve around the study of thermal properties of disordered and nanoscale materials, with special focus on the ultrathin film limit and low-dimensional solids. (https://gtnam.org/). 'Phonon engineering in precisely assembled atomically thin layers (PETITE)' aims at development of advanced 2D materials with enhanced elastic and thermal anisotropy via phonon engineering, by controlling the precise arrangement of atomic layers and their relative angle and interface quality.
Main Tasks and responsibilities:
The candidate will be involved in the international (Europe-Japan) PETITE project on thermal transport in 2D materials. The main tasks involve:
- To develop nanofabrication methods for free-standing, large-area 2D materials (mechanical exfoliation and dry transfer).
- To study nanoscale transport in suspended and supported 2D materials.
Requirements:
- Education: BSc/MSc in Physics, Nanoscience or similar.
- Knowledge and Professional Experience: Knowledge of experimental techniques for nanofabrication for 2D materials. Knowlgedge of optical characterization techniques, such as Raman spectroscopy will be a plus.
- Personal Competences: Excellent organizational and time-management skills, including the ability to deliver timely and high-quality outputs. Ability to demonstrate scientific writing and communication skills in English. Ability to work independently, use own initiative, where appropriate, and be proactive in approach to work. Ability to work with highly qualified professionals with international backgrounds.
Summary of conditions:
- Full time work (37,5h/week)
- Contract Length: Temporary, 6 months

How to apply:
All applications must be made via the ICN2 website and include the following:
- A full CV including contact details.
- Reference letters or referee contacts
Deadline for applications: Applications will be reviewed continuously.
