Siemens Mobility is a separately managed company of Siemens. As a leader in transport solutions for more than 160 years, Siemens Mobility is constantly innovating its portfolio in its core areas of rolling stock, rail automation and electrification, turnkey systems, intelligent traffic systems as well as related services.
You will be responsible for applying Siemens cybersecurity solutions to railway signalling projects.
This is an application engineering role: you will work with Siemens products and configure, integrate, and deploy them to meet the requirements of each project and customer. We offer a very attractive arena for growth, where both technical and management skills are necessary to stand out.
Regardless of your experience in railway or cybersecurity, please note the following:
-
Railway projects have long engineering cycles.
Before any hands-on deployment, there are extensive phases of documentation, technical analysis, and design review with the relevant railway or cybersecurity authorities. If you're looking for a role where you're configuring systems from day one, this isn't it.
- The role does not involve pentesting, cybersecurity consultancy (elaboration of risk analysis, etc.), SOC/SIEM monitoring, or pure software development.
-
If you are keen to sharpen or develop your management skills in large-scale projects, and you enjoy understanding a system deeply, designing its application on paper, defending your design in technical discussions, and then blasting your shell-fu to make it work: Read on!
Technical documentation: Author and maintain design documents, architectural descriptions, configuration specifications, requirement traceability, and commissioning procedures. Documentation is a primary deliverable and the embodiment of a design, not an afterthought. It must be precise, well-structured, and withstand tough customer review.
Customer- and Team-facing technical discussion: Participate in design reviews, technical clarifications, and requirement negotiations with railway operators, system integrators, and the rest of the engineering team. You must be able to explain why a cybersecurity architecture is designed the way it is, using your technical knowledge and grounded in applicable standards.
Product application and configuration: Configure and deploy Siemens cybersecurity components (such as IAM, PKI, SIEM, and others) on containerized Linux-based platforms. This activity will entail deeply understanding enterprise-grade server hardware, networking architectures, working with containers and systemd-managed services, and troubleshooting integration issues between the cybersecurity platform and the endpoints.
Verification and validation: Define and execute test cases to verify that the deployed cybersecurity solution meets the project's security requirements and integrates correctly with the signalling system.
Cybersecurity standards compliance: Ensure that engineering outputs comply with applicable cybersecurity standards and customer-specific requirements.
Commissioning: Make it real. After the office and lab work, helmet and high-vis jacket are on and stakes are high. You will participate in the commissioning process, travelling [CT1] worldwide if necessary.
These are hard requirements. Expect to be evaluated on them during the selection process.
Linux system administration: You must be comfortable working in CLI, deploying and configuring an OS, reading and interpreting logs, managing services with systemd, and with basic scripting (Bash). If your experience is limited to desktop distributions with a GUI, this role is likely not a match.
Containers: Working knowledge of container technologies (Docker/Podman). While deep architectural expertise is not required, pulling images, running and inspecting containers, understanding volume mounts, networking, and troubleshooting are things you will need to know.
Networking fundamentals: Solid understanding of networking concepts. You should be able to look at a network architecture diagram and derive a working configuration, as well as identify or troubleshoot what's wrong when traffic doesn't flow as expected.
Technical writing: Demonstrated ability to produce clear, structured technical documentation in English and Spanish. This is not a secondary skill; it is one of the most important deliverables of this role. As documents carry your signature as author, they will speak about your engineering quality to external and internal stakeholders.
Analytical and systematic mindset: Ability to read and interpret technical standards, customer specifications, and system architecture documents, and translate them into concrete engineering actions.
While not strict requirements, we highly value familiarity with systems hardening, x509 certificate management, auth protocols (such as 802.1X), relevant standards, and tools such as git or Ansible.
Autonomy and accountability: You will receive guidance and direction, but you must be able to take ownership of your work packages, identify problems early, and propose solutions.
Curiosity: What made you set up a home lab is exactly what will make you thrive here. We need people who enjoy understanding what’s under the hood.
Languages: You will need to convey complex concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders. C1 level in English and Spanish is strictly necessary.
This role entails responsibility. We look for about 3 to 5 years of relevant professional experience.
The role is open for graduates in Computer Science, Telecommunications Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or a closely related field.
Additional credentials are welcome, but capability is preferred over academic qualification. Likewise, we are aware that excellent technicians may have the skills and perform the functions described above. Don’t hesitate to apply if you are one of these.
