Project: Immigration and Demographic Metabolism in the City of Barcelona (Barcelona City Council – Foment de Ciutat)
Project overview
This project aims to analyse the demographic and residential transformations of Barcelona’s neighbourhoods during the period 2000–2025, with particular attention to the role of international immigration in shaping contemporary urban dynamics. The project is structured around three main research lines:
Analysis of immigration and residential location patterns in Barcelona’s neighbourhoods (2000-2025), examining the evolution of the territorial distribution of the immigrant population, processes of residential concentration and dispersion, and changes in settlement patterns over time.
Study of the foreign-born population and intra-urban residential mobility dynamics, with the objective of identifying the factors associated with residential movements between neighbourhoods, population replacement processes, and the residential trajectories of different migrant groups.
Analysis of the foreign population and the demographic metabolism of Barcelona’s neighbourhoods, jointly considering population inflows and outflows, births, deaths, and migration movements in order to assess the contribution of immigration to population renewal and demographic transformations at the neighbourhood level.
Main responsabilities
a) Analyse the contribution of international immigration to population renewal processes in Barcelona’s neighbourhoods, assessing its impact on age structure, composition by place of birth, demographic growth or decline, and generational replacement processes. The researcher will develop specific demographic metabolism indicators and examine the interaction between the components of demographic change (births, deaths, immigration, and emigration) at the neighbourhood level.
b) Develop and validate neighbourhood typologies according to their demographic and residential dynamics using multivariate statistical techniques and classification methods. The typologies will be based on variables related to demographic structure, migratory composition, residential mobility, residential segregation processes, population renewal, and other available socioeconomic indicators.
c) Contribute to the scientific dissemination of project results, including the preparation of articles for high-impact international journals, presentations at specialised conferences, and the production of research reports aimed at public administrations and other stakeholders interested in urban and migration policies.
d) Collaborate with the project research team, contributing to methodological development, the supervision of early-career researchers, and the preparation of new competitive research proposals in the fields of urban demography and international migration.
