The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), and is now hosting entity for EuroHPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads large-scale investments and HPC provision in Europe. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 1000 staff from 60 countries.

Context And Mission
The Scientific Officer provides high-level support in the execution of the BSC-AII strategic plan as an integral member of the Technical and Administrative Support team of the AI Institute. Working under teh supervision of the AII coordinator, in close collaboration with teammates, the Communications team and scientific leadership, the role focuses on streamlining internal workflows, facilitating cross-departmental communication and managing the administrative lifecycle of strategic research proposals to ensure the Institute meets its scientific and operational milestones.
The key duties below are in collaboration with the abovementioned roles.
Key Duties
- Strategic Alignment & Institutional Support.
- Strategic Planning: Support the Director and leadership team in the definition and implementation of the BSC-AII Strategic Plan.
- Project Coordination: Assist in the high-level coordination and operational support of strategic research projects.
- Performance Monitoring: Track and monitor the Institute’s scientific production and overall performance metrics to ensure alignment with institutional goals.
- Proposal Management & Funding
- Grant & Proposal Development: Participate in the preparation, submission and management of competitive national and international strategic proposals.
- Project Tracking: Collaborate closely with the Project Management Office (PMO) to ensure rigorous monitoring and execution of active projects.
- Internal Governance & Cross-Departmental Liaison
- Internal Operations: Define, draft and oversee internal operational protocols to streamline workflows within the AI Institute.
- BSC Institutional Liaison: Establish and maintain communication protocols with BSC central departments (Legal, HR, IPR, PMO, etc.) to ensure seamless institutional integration.
- Team Alignment: Schedule and participate in periodic coordination meetings with Team and Line Leaders to ensure fluid internal communication.
- Education, Training & Community Building
- Training Programs: Design, promote and assist in the delivery of specific BSC-AII Training Programs, collaborating with other departments when necessary.
- Internal Knowledge Sharing: Organize internal seminars and knowledge-sharing initiatives to foster collaboration across AII teams.
- Scientific Dissemination & Events
- Scientific Events: Support the planning, execution and organization of the BSC-AII scientific meetings and international conference calendar.
- Research Visibility: Collaborate with the BSC Communications and Dissemination teams to boost the internal and external visibility of the Institute's research outputs and activities.
- Outreach Initiatives: Drive and support scientific dissemination and public outreach initiatives to promote the Institute's ecosystem.
Requirements
- Education
- Bachelor’s degree in linguistics, engineering or technological field.
- Master’s degree in computational linguistics, engineering or a related field.
- PhD in a related field is considered a plus
- Project Management Certification is considered a plus
- Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
- Five years of experience in a research environment.
- Strong knowledge of national and international public projects and funding.
- Proficiency in drafting high-level reports for stakeholders, boards of directors, or funding agencies.
- Experience in event organization and training design will be considered a plus.
- Experience in team management is considered a plus
- Excellent in spoken and written English, Spanish and Catalan
- Competences
- Proven team coordination skills, including assigning priorities, guiding contributors, and ensuring effective collaboration within multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong organisational and project management skills, with the ability to plan, prioritise, and deliver multiple workstreams simultaneously.
- Proven ability to coordinate stakeholders and manage relationships across diverse, multidisciplinary project partner teams.
- Proven capacity to manage multiple events, campaigns, and deadlines in a fast-paced project environment.
- High attention to detail and strong analytical skills.
- Proactive, collaborative, and solution-oriented mindset, with the ability to anticipate needs and resolve issues effectively.

Development of the recruitment process
The selection will be carried out through a competitive examination system ("Concurso-Oposición"). The recruitment process consists of two phases:
- Curriculum Analysis: Evaluation of previous experience and/or scientific history, degree, training, and other professional information relevant to the position. - 40 points

Interview phase: The highest-rated candidates at the curriculum level will be invited to the interview phase, conducted by the corresponding department and Human Resources. In this phase, technical competencies, knowledge, skills, and professional experience related to the position, as well as the required personal competencies, will be evaluated. - 60 points. A minimum of 30 points out of 60 must be obtained to be eligible for the position.
The recruitment panel will be composed of at least three people, ensuring at least 25% representation of women.
In accordance with OTM-R principles, a gender-balanced recruitment panel is formed for each vacancy at the beginning of the process. After reviewing the content of the applications, the panel will begin the interviews, with at least one technical and one administrative interview. At a minimum, a personality questionnaire as well as a technical exercise will be conducted during the process.
The panel will make a final decision, and all individuals who participated in the interview phase will receive feedback with details on the acceptance or rejection of their profile.
