About BSC
The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), and is now hosting entity for EuroHPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads large-scale investments and HPC provision in Europe. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 1000 staff from 60 countries.

We are particularly interested for this role in the strengths and lived experiences of women and underrepresented groups to help us avoid perpetuating biases and oversights in science and IT research. In instances of equal merit, the incorporation of the under-represented sex will be favoured.
We promote Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, fostering an environment where each and every one of us is appreciated for who we are, regardless of our differences.
If you consider that you do not meet all the requirements, we encourage you to continue applying for the job offer. We value diversity of experiences and skills, and you could bring unique perspectives to our team.
Context And Mission
The Machine Learning for Biomedical Research Unit, lead by Dr. Davide Cirillo, applies machine learning to biomedical problems generating resources and tools for biomedical research and secondary use of the data. The Unit is focused on providing support in projects related to machine learning spanning several areas of application, including precision medicine, genomics, and systems biology. To achieve extreme scale and high performance of our applications, we account for the use of high-performance computing and the collaboration with specialized groups at BSC.
The Technologies for Biomedical Research Lab (TechBioLab), lead by Dr. Salvador Capella Gutierrez, is part of the Life Sciences Department of the BSC and brings together specialised teams with a focus on developing infrastructures that support Life Sciences research. This includes software components for bioinformatics, research data management – especially in healthcare – and scientific and technical benchmarking of research software in close collaboration with various communities and projects. Special attention is given to technological developments enabling the analysis of sensitive data in federated settings.
The Machine Learning for Biomedical Research Unit and the TechBioLab are looking for a Research Engineer, specialised in web front-end development, to contribute to the development of the online biomedical portal for the SEED-ALS project (PMPER24/00017). SEED-ALS is a national initiative at collecting, integrating, and analyzing multi-omics data related to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) to support advanced research and data sharing.
The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and implementing a web-based portal that will:
1. Support browsing and display of biomedical dataset information from external data repositories and archives.
2. Enable interactive visualization and navigation of analysis results and predictive models developed within the project.
3. Facilitate access to the European Genome-Phenome Archive EGA infrastructure for dataset submission and controlled-access data download by researchers.
This role offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of biomedical data science, web development, and high-performance computing, in collaboration with national and international experts in ALS research.
Key Duties
- Develop the SEED-ALS data portal, including front-end and back-end components, according to the project visual identity and the pilot data portal.
- Integrate data access and query functionalities with biomedical data resources such as EGA, Monarch, BioGRID and other ALS sources.
- Implement data visualization tools for summary statistics and machine learning model results.
- Ensure portal usability, scalability, and security following best practices.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including bioinformaticians, data scientists, and software engineers.
- Contribute to technical documentation and, where applicable, scientific dissemination.
- Communicate and present results to internal teams and external scientific audiences.
Requirements

- Experience with back-end development (e.g., Node.js, Django, Flask, FastAPI).
- Experience with REST APIs and database technologies (SQL and/or NoSQL).
- Strong programming skills in Python, JavaScript and/or TypeScript.
- Experience with data and graph visualization libraries (e.g., D3.js, Plotly, vis.js, react-force-graph).
- Basic understanding of data formats commonly used in bioinformatics (e.g., VCF, FASTQ, BAM).
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.
- Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
- Knowledge of biomedical data repositories, especially EGA and Monarch.
- Interest or background in ALS or multi-omics data.
- Interest in multilayer network graph based approaches.
