AVL is looking for a Powertrain Calibration Engineer to join a long-term resident engineering team working on-site with a major automotive OEM in Barcelona.
This position offers exposure to the complete calibration and validation process, including combustion calibration, OBD diagnostics, emissions development, vehicle testing, data analysis and customer deliverables.
The engineer will participate in all stages of the development process, from vehicle preparation and test execution to calibration definition, technical analysis, reporting and project follow-up.
The role provides opportunities to work on both conventional gasoline powertrains and advanced hybrid architectures, within an international and highly technical environment.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES:
As a Powertrain Calibration Engineer, you will participate in the complete development and validation process of OBD, emissions and combustion-related functions.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Developing, validating and delivering calibration datasets for OBD diagnostic functions and emissions-related strategies.
- Supporting combustion, drivability, fuel consumption and emissions calibration activities for gasoline and hybrid powertrains.
- Defining, executing and analyzing vehicle, chassis dyno, engine dyno and emissions testing activities.
- Supporting vehicle preparation, instrumentation, ECU flashing and workshop activities required for testing and development campaigns.
- Analyzing test data, identifying root causes and proposing calibration or diagnostic improvements.
- Supporting the development and validation of OBD monitoring strategies such as misfire detection, catalyst monitoring, sensor diagnostics, EVAP monitoring and emissions-related functions.
- Preparing technical reports, calibration documentation, activity definition and monitoring and customer deliverables according to project milestones.
- Following activities from initial definition through validation, issue resolution and final closure.
- Supporting certification, compliance and emissions validation activities for different markets and regulations.
- Collaborating with calibration, testing, software, hardware and project management teams to achieve project objectives.
- Contributing proactively to technical discussions, troubleshooting activities and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Taking ownership of assigned activities while maintaining a strong team-oriented mindset.
YOUR PROFILE:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Mechanical, Automotive, Electronics, Industrial Engineering or similar.
- Experience in powertrain calibration, OBD, emissions, engine development or vehicle testing.
- Understanding of internal combustion engines, emissions formation and diagnostic strategies.
- Experience analyzing vehicle, engine or emissions test data.
- Familiarity with calibration and measurement tools (INCA, CANape, MDA, ODIS or similar).
- Fluent English (spoken and written).
- Valid driving license.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with ability to work in multidisciplinary teams.
- Willingness to work hands-on with vehicles and testing activities.
- Experience in OBD development and validation and emissions calibration.
- Experience with gasoline engines, hybrid powertrains or electrified systems.
- Knowledge of WLTP, RDE, PEMS or similar emissions testing procedures.
- Familiarity with development processes and tools (ASPICE, DOORS, Jira, etc.).
- Python skills for data analysis or automation.
- Experience working with OEMs or coordinating technical activities.
- German language skills (a plus).
